Play-based Light Table Ideas
Let’s light it up! A few years ago I wrote a grant for light panels and a variety of translucent materials to help increase language skills and it has been one of our favorite activities to use in therapy. I use my light panel during therapy sessions throughout the year and also during our school-wide science night each year. If you don’t have a light table at your school or setting I highly recommend investing in one. It has been very engaging for my students, especially those with sensory needs. Check out these ideas for using a light panel!
All the materials we used are translucent in some way but as you’ll see paper can be used just as easily. I’ll share links to the materials we used with each picture. Here is the light panel that I use the most but I have also used a light box too.
These translucent pattern blocks are from amazon. This can be an open-ended activity or you can pair it with task cards.
While thelight box is not as bright as the panel it is considerably less expensive and these rainbow stones were easy to use.
We paired the communication board with the magnetic blocks for this activity. This activity was an “ice castle” we worked to build together. We point to the communication board while playing.
These bricks are very similar to legos. Here is how we set it up for science night.
For the peg board game, each player was assigned a color of pegs. The red pegs are “out of bounds”. Players take turns placing a peg. The first player to get four in a row wins! A great way to mix in a little fine motor practice too.
Connect Four is always a hit during therapy. Here we paired this translucent set with my speech and language mats to target specific speech sounds while we played.
These sorting trays are great for discussions in same/different or comparing/contrasting.
